Third Grade

 Miss Fitzgerald

In third grade we learn:

In ReligionWe will take a deeper look into the main truths Catholics believe and express in the Creed.  The students will come to realize that they are called to belong to a faith community, the Church.  They are led to develop a clearer, deeper faith in the study of God as revealed in creation, his dealings with the chosen people, and the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

In Math: Students are introduced to many new concepts in third grade.  We begin by adding onto what was learned in first and second grade, then we move onto multiplication and division.  Students need to know their basic addition and subtraction facts and will be asked to memorize their times tables as well this year.

In Science: We will look into six different units:
Plants and Animals/Plants and Animals Interact/Earth's Land
Cycles on Earth and in Space/Investigation Matter/Exploring Energy and Forces
Each unit provides for multiple opportunities for hands on learning and discovery.

In Health:  Third graders will develop an understanding for their own body.  We will discuss the ways we care for ourselves by eating healthy, exercising, preventing diseases, and keeping safe.

In Social Studies:  We will learn about communities beginning with the Native Americans through present day.  We also learn about governments and the different ways people earn money in today's world.  In addition, students are also taught a variety of study and geography skills.  The students will take part in activities which will allow them to learn more about Dell Rapids, as well as other communities across America.

In Reading:  Students will have the opportunity to enhance their reading fluency and comprehension through large and small group activities.  Each week the class will work through a series of activities and concepts related to a story introduced.  Students will also work in small groups with leveled books to help directly meet their reading needs.  Outside of school, students will be required to read at least 15 minutes, 4 days per week.

In Language Arts:  We will be learning and applying the mechanics of the English Language including correct sentence structure and parts of speech, and also writing with different genres.  Our grammar lessons are directly related to our reading lessons for each week.  Students will also be asked to complete a written book report every two weeks.

In Spelling:  We continue with the Saxon Phonics Program.  Along with weekly spelling tests, students will be asked to complete two spelling activities at home.
